Now that summer seems to have appeared and many of us are in the process of booking holidays, it’s time to get out the swimming costumes and bikinis and take a look at the parts of the body which have been covered up all winter.

The chances are that those of us of a ‘certain age’; those of us who have given birth; those of us who have not been eating healthily and have not been taking regular exercise, will have increased the amounts of cellulite visible on our rumps, thighs, stomachs and even upper arms. What can we do about it and can we get rid of this ‘orange peel’ skin before the holidays?

Thankfully, there is quite a lot we can do to lose cellulite – not all of it pleasant – and although the results are not guaranteed, if we stick to it there are bound to be advantages.

There are many reasons why we get cellulite, which is caused by damage to the connective tissue in the body, and if we can eliminate some of these we have a good chance of reducing cellulite.

The causes of cellulite are not altogether clear but it is understood that hormones are likely to play an important part in its development. It is believed that certain drugs such as insulin, thyroid hormones, noradrenaline, etc. are part of the cellulite production process. Also, certain genes may promote the appearance of cellulite and it seems that if your mother had cellulite, you will have it too.

Diet is very important since people who eat too much fat, carbohydrates and salt are likely to develop greater amounts of cellulite. Smokers too, those who stand or sit in one position for long periods of time and take little exercise are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite.

The most effective and economical way of reducing cellulite is to adopt a healthy lifestyle but a ‘quick fix’ may be needed if the beach is beckoning and the weather is good.

There are lots of creams and lotions on the market, some of which can be quite useful. Revitol Cellulite Solution is one of these creams and in a lot of cellulite sufferers has proved to be very effective. It works relatively quickly, is reasonably priced and has safe ingredients. When massaged into the cellulite areas it works by stimulating circulation, helping to melt fat and moves fluid and toxins out of the body producing visible results within a few weeks.

Women especially are susceptible and it is thought that about 90% of women have cellulite, which is caused by the accumulation of pockets of fat under the skin which give an ‘orange peel’ or ‘cottage cheese’ appearance and can look quite ugly.

The ‘curse’ part of cellulite is obvious and affects mainly the thighs, stomach and buttocks and in some cases, the upper arms. Many people, especially those who are overweight, become lethargic, suffer from tiredness and therefore take very little exercise and so it becomes a vicious circle and it isn’t easy to break it.

So what are the blessings of cellulite and can anything be done about it?

Well, first of all it indicates poor circulation and poor eating and drinking habits and yes, lots of things can be done about it and in dealing with it you will become healthier, fitter and consequently a lot happier.

Have a look at your eating and drinking habits and your general life style.

Try to cut down on your intake of caffeine and alcohol. In fact if you can cut them out altogether, even for a short time, you will notice the benefits. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, make sure you have plenty of fibre, which helps lower fat and cholesterol levels in the body; cut down on red meat and fatty foods, salt and sugar; drink lots and lots of water – at least two litres a day; this will flush out the system and help to get rid of the toxins which accumulate in the body; have a glass of hot water with a squeeze of lemon first thing in the morning and get into the habit of taking regular exercise.

There are many creams, such as Revitol Cellulite Removal, which you can apply yourself to the affected areas of the body and which are very useful in the reduction of cellulite, especially if used in conjunction with a healthy life style. Massaging with Revitol stimulates the blood flow, increases the skin’s elasticity and reduces the appearance of cellulite and it will make you feel good too.

There are also some oral products on the market but these can be dangerous if taken in conjunction with other medicines and they do not appear to be as effective as the cream since the cream goes directly to the source of the problem.

So, there you are – lots of blessings for just a little sacrifice – and a cellulite free body can be yours!

Cellulite is a bit of a curse but, if dealt with sensibly, it can spur you on to become fit and a lot healthier. About 90% of women are prone to cellulite, which is quite ugly and appears mainly on the buttocks, thighs and stomach.

Cellulite consists of little globules of fatty tissue, which appear under the skin and are often referred to as “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” skin (amongst other things!). Dieting on its own doesn’t remove cellulite but if combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet the effects can be greatly reduced. Cut down on carbohydrates; drink lots of water, eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and foods with high fibre content, try to maintain a healthy weight and avoid stress (easier said than done!).

Try leaving your worries at home and go out to an exercise class where you meet people like yourself. You won’t have time to worry because you will be concentrating on the exercises and once you get into a proper routine you will find yourself looking forward to the class and the other members will soon become friends.

Caffeine, alcohol and smoking are also thought to exacerbate the appearance of cellulite so these should be avoided as far as possible.

Some items of clothing are thought to reduce cellulite, such as compression garments, which try to compress arteries and increase blood flow thus diminishing the visual appearance of cellulite.

Other likely causes are hormonal and some hormones, such as insulin, oestrogen, thyroid hormones, prolactin and noradrenaline can play a part in the production of cellulite as can poor circulation. Cellulite problems are thought to be genetic – so if your mother has it, you are likely to have it too blame her!

There are a number of cosmetic products on the market, which can camouflage the appearance of cellulite but there is no scientific proof that these are successful. However, combined with a healthy diet, the appearance of cellulite can be diminished and a good, deep massage can stimulate lymphatic flow and while not a permanent ‘fix’ can also be very effective and will make you feel good!

There are many theories relating to the cause and treatment of cellulite but none of them have been proved outright. Cellulite is not easy to remove although it can be camouflaged and, in many cases, reduced.

Cellulite is caused by little lumps of fat appearing just under the skin, mainly on the stomach, thighs and buttocks and mainly in women, although it is not uncommon in men. These little lumps of fat cause the skin to take on an ‘orange peel’ or ‘cottage cheese’ type texture and are quite unsightly. Cellulite is less noticeable in people with less fat because in fatter people, the swelling of sub dermal fat cells move the connective tissues which hold the cells together thus causing cellulite to form. Dieting, simply to lose weight, does not seem to be effective unless combined with a good, healthy diet comprising high fibre food, a reduction of carbohydrates, regular exercise and drinking lots and lots of water.

Cellulite Remedies

There are also a number of medicinal remedies on the market that are supposed to act on fatty tissues (not necessarily cellulite) but some prescribed medicines can be affected by these drugs and it is wiser not to take them unless you have spoken to your doctor first.

The most appropriate remedies are the natural ones, which will not only reduce cellulite but also promote general good health and a feeling of well-being. Blueberries, nuts and black grapes are supposed to be very beneficial, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, particularly onions will help and a reduction in the intake of salt and fat is recommended.

Alcohol slows down the digestive processes in the body and makes it store food as fat so it is well to steer clear of it. Caffeine also should be avoided and we all know what smoking does not only in the production of cellulite but to our general health!

Cellulite Reduction Massage

A good, deep, massage is beneficial in breaking down fat cells, improving circulation and reducing cellulite. There are many products which can be used at home or, as a special treat, go to a salon and let someone else give you a nice massage. Some salons specialise in massage which breaks down cellulite and although the results are not permanent, they do work for a time.

It is believed that hormones such as oestrogen, insulin and thyroid hormones, play a part in the production of cellulite. A slow metabolism and poor circulation can also be contributory factors, as can stress.

Cellulite can blight your life. It is very unsightly and women, especially, are prone to developing cellulite – especially round the buttocks and thighs.

After a winter of hunching over the fire, eating comfort foods and taking very little exercise, when the better weather appears and we throw off our winter woollies and try on the miniskirts and bikinis, we are horrified by all the unsightly lumps and bumps and wrinkles round our nether regions especially.

However, don’t despair; there are many cellulite remedies, most of which are simple and only require a little thought and some self control.

There are also many creams and preparations on the market which, used in conjunction with simple exercises and sensible diet, can be of great benefit. Although cellulite might not disappear completely, it can be camouflaged.

Some of the main causes of developing cellulite can be overweight, poor diet, lack of exercise and in post-natal women, high levels of oestrogen in the body, which cannot be got rid of by the body’s waste system.

If your mother had cellulite, the chances are you will develop it also. However if you cut down your intake of caffeine and alcohol and eat, as far as possible, high fibre foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, (onions are supposed to be very good in helping to reduce cellulite) you will soon see the benefit and you will also feel so much better and more energetic that you will enjoy exercising! Try to cut down on your intake of extra salt and fat, drink lots of water and give up smoking!

Massaging, either at home or in the salon helps to increase the circulation and thus breaks down the cellulite. There are lots of lovely creams and oils on the market, which are helpful, smell lovely, and make you feel good as well as diminishing cellulite. If you feel like really pampering yourself, treat yourself to a massage. There are some salons which specialise in the treatment of cellulite.

Exercise is always beneficial, not only in the reduction of cellulite but also in the improvement of general fitness and health and if you persevere, you will soon find that the cellulite has diminished, your whole body, as well as your bottom and thighs are nice and firm and you feel fit and happy and in order to show off this ‘new you’ you will just have to go out and buy yourself a stunning new bikini because you will not have a trace of cellulite!

The causes of cellulite are many and varied and it affects about 90% of women and a much smaller number of men. I always thought it was to do with being overweight but this is not true. Cellulite can appear in thin women too. It gives the appearance of ‘lumps’ under the skin, mostly on thighs and buttocks and may be caused by the skin losing its elasticity.

As one gets older the skin becomes ‘loose’ and the skin layer becomes thinner, thus causing the contents of the deep skin layer to be redistributed and resulting in the appearance of cellulite.

If there is a large amount of oestrogen in the body, especially in cases of post natal women or those on birth control products, the body’s waste system is unable to cope and this, it is believed, can cause the development of cellulite.

There are many creams and pills on the market, which claim to help lose cellulite, but these can only help if we try to improve our lifestyle.

For instance, a poor diet, which can cause the production of fat and fluid retention, increases the instances of cellulite. A sensible, balanced diet and regular exercise are extremely beneficial not only in decreasing cellulite but also in the improvement of our general health. The connective tissue in the skin is hardened by lack of exercise and this in turn causes cellulite and the appearance of ‘dimples’.

We should also try to reduce our intake of alcohol and coffee and try to keep off processed foods as these produce toxins which get trapped in the fatty tissue and produce cellulite. Toxic waste, fat and water, which the body has failed to eliminate, make up the content of cellulite so it is recommended that we drink plenty of water, which will flush out these toxins and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

A ‘sensible diet’ does not mean a crash diet which can be detrimental to health and can increase the risk of cellulite since the body, starved of food, uses stored saturated fat and this can build up cellulite.

Smoking, which we all know is detrimental to our general health, also damages the connective tissue in the body and causes the dimpled effect in cellulite.

In a lot of cases the production of cellulite in the body is genetic. If, for instance, your mother had cellulite, the chances are you will have it too but all is not lost it is possible to reduce cellulite!

Getting a massage or doing one yourself will improve the appearance of cellulite as it stimulates the circulation and removes toxins from the tissues to be flushed out by the lymph glands. Deep tissue or sports massage is better for this than light aromatherapy massage as sports massage gets deep into the tissues, smoothing and manipulating.

It can be uncomfortable at the time, but has a wonderful effect on the skin and muscles, and once you get used to deep massage you will start to enjoy it and you will most definitely notice the effects upon your body, as sports massage tones skin and muscle, breaks down the inflexible cell membranes that cause the appearance of cellulite, and stimulates your immune system, making you feel full of energy and far more likely to exercise then you normally would!

One form of self-massage that you can do yourself in the shower is body brushing; use a brush with natural bristles and work in a circular motion, starting at your legs and working upwards (always use upward motions towards the heart to stimulate good bloodflow). This movement starts to break down the congestion in the fatty areas around the hips and thighs, and will most certainly bring a glow to your skin! Wet brushing is milder than dry, but either will exfoliate the top layers of the skin and stimulate the lower layers, which will improve their appearance and make your skin feel a lot smoother.

There are several aromatherapy oils that can help you lose cellulite, but you should always read labels carefully and be aware of any contraindications. Useful oils include the citrus oils grapefruit, orange, and lemon and the relaxing and uplifting oils bergamot and geranium.

If you want to reduce cellulite it can be helped by minimising the toxins within the body whether caused by the environment or your eating habits. Food produced without the use of pesticides or over-refinement is best, with organic food being the ultimate choice, and fruit and vegetables should be eaten raw where possible as cooking diminishes their natural goodness.

Bear in mind that cellulite is made worse by a sedentary lifestyle, stress, drug abuse, smoking and drinking. I’m not saying that you should never again have a nice glass of wine, but keep it well within the recommended daily amount and never save up all your units and binge! Not only will you have a miserable hangover, but your liver and kidneys will have to work overtime to rid your body of the alcohol you have imbibed, as alcohol is simply poison to the body, and any left- over toxins tend to end up within your fat cells causing cellulite.

Mention the term cellulite in company and you will see most women shudder at its mere mention. Cellulite is the name given to the dimpled appearance of skin on the thighs and buttocks, most commonly found in women after puberty. It is thought to be caused by certain hormonal changes within the body, and affects up to 90% of all women.

Cellulite is very unsightly, and we all hate it! It spoils the smooth appearance of our skin, and gives it the appearance of orange peel, and once it appears it is extremely hard to get rid of. Cellulite is caused by fat under the skin becoming held tight by the surrounding tissue, which becomes inflexible and holds the fat in clumps rather than allowing it redistribute evenly.

So what causes cellulite? And more importantly, how can we get rid of it?

Experts think that it is caused by the blood and oxygen supply to the tissues being poor, so if your bum always feels cold to the touch, that’s probably why! Diet, lifestyle and genetics also have a large part to play – it goes without saying that a healthy diet packed with fruit and vegetables, moderate amounts of lean meat and the minimum of fatty, sugary foods and alcohol, combined with regular exercise will drastically increase your chances of either not getting cellulite or being able to reduce its unsightly appearance.

We all have fat cells – there’s no two ways about that – and having some fat is essential to life. But when you gain too much fat, with the buttock and thigh area being a favourite deposit site in the female body, it stands to reason that it will start to affect the appearance of those areas. The type of exercise that will help is brisk cardiovascular exercise such as walking uphill, jogging, swimming; you get the idea.

Do 20 to 30 minutes at a pace that makes you slightly breathless and makes you sweat at least three times a week, preferably four. Add to that specific butt and thigh exercises such as squats, lunges and donkey kicks, making sure you engage your butt muscles correctly by squeezing your butt cheeks together as hard as you can. No, I’m not joking! Most of the people I see doing leg exercises are letting their hamstrings and their lower back take all the work while their glutes just sit there (joke!).

As you have seen, there is plenty you can do to lose cellulite without any special products. Eat well, sleep well, drink loads of water and take regular exercise and you’ll go a long way towards reducing it.
